PC CoD4 Steam Version HELP!?

I downloaded Cod4 off of steam and im really interested in playing the mods but whenever i join a server with the mods it downloads the mod, then the game just quits and i cant play mods. If anyone knows how to fix this i would really appreciate it because the mods look like a lot of fun.
